György who ?
György Ligeti was one of the major classical composers of the 20th century. He died on June 12th, 2006. His biography is thoroughly detailed on Wikipedia.
Are these tracks really exclusive to this site ?
Yes. With many thanks to all of the artists involved. However, they remain free to release commercially the track they have contributed later in time.
Are these tracks really free ?
Yes ! This is a non-profit website.
Are these remixes of Ligeti's work ?
No. All artists are asked to submit tracks influenced by Ligeti's work and not to interpret or sample any existing pieces in order to avoid copyright infringement.
Can I save the tracks to my computer ?
Yes. Just click on "320" or "FLAC" before each artist name. The file will automatically download onto your computer to the location specified in your browser's preferences. The file is compressed in Zip format. If your computer doesn't "unzip" it automatically, you may have to download an appropriate software to do it manually.
What is the difference between 320 & FLAC ?
320 are mp3 files. From now on, all tracks are available at 320kbps. FLAC is a lossless format for people who are very demanding on sound quality. All are encoded straight from the master files submitted by the artists.
How can I submit a track ?
Please host it somewhere of your convenience and click on the "Contact" tab. Provide me with the URL to the file and the possible password needed to access it. All tracks that fulfill the requirements will be published online. You can also reach me on MySpace.
What makes an acceptable track ?
Any track considered as far too irrelevant and having clearly no link whatsoever to Ligeti's musical style will not be accepted. It is strongly advised that you listen to the wide variety of tracks already on the site before submitting yours to have a sense of how far you can go. Don't worry though, as long as you don't send an obvious joke, you should be fine.
At what bitrate should I encode my track ?
All lossless formats such as AIFF, WAV, APE, FLAC, SHN, etc. are accepted. I ask for optimum quality files in order to preserve a uniform quality between all submissions and limit sound discrepancies when later compressed at 320 kbps and FLAC format for online publishing and 64 kbps for streaming/listening.
Can I submit more than one track ?
It would be good if you could pick only one before you submit it. If you are not sure, then send several but bear in mind that only ONE will be published online.
How long will these tracks be hosted online for ?
The idea is to keep this online compilation active eternally with new contributions added regularly.
Does my music have to involve electronic elements to be accepted ?
Yes. That is actually the whole idea behind this project !
Is there a MySpace page for this tribute ?
How can I keep track of the new submissions ?
New additions and updates are frequently posted on this Braindance! messageboard thread.
Are there official catalogue numbers for these releases ?
Originally titled GLT001, GLT002 and so forth when only MP3 versions were available, they have now been renamed GLT followed by the release number and the letter F for FLAC files (ex. GLT001F) and GLT followed by the release number and the letter M for MP3 files (ex. GLT001M).
As of March 1st, 2010, the website is open to contributions from visual artists inspired by the work of Ligeti. That includes drawings, paintings, photography, video, etc.
Who is behind this project ?
My name is Topher. I am currently based in Antibes in the south of France. I am a musician and occasional DJ. Most of the projects I am involved in are linked from www.topher.fr.
What browser should I use to view the site ?
The website is optimized for viewing on Firefox. If you wish to report minor display bugs due to use on other browsers, please provide the solution as well since web designing is not exactly my forte.
I can't find an answer to my question in the F.A.Q.
For any other queries, please get in touch with me by sending me a message using the "Contact" tab at the top of the page or via the MySpace page.
